Supercross (2005)

Critic Consensus: While it showcases some cool stunts, Supercross feels like an infomercial for its titular sport, with undeveloped characters and a shopworn plot.

Movie Info

Two siblings find themselves competing on and off the racetrack in this action-packed drama. K.C. Carlyle (Steve Howey) and his kid brother, Trip (Mike Vogel), are both racers in the rough and tumble world of supercross, a revved-up variation on motocross racing in which specially modified motorcycle negotiate specially built dirt tracks that send riders through tricky twists and turns, over rough terrain, and off high-flying jumps. Both are talented racers, but K.C. has a wilder and more reckless approach, while Trip follows a more cautious path. A more profound difference between them arises when K.C. is offered a lucrative deal to ride for a factory-sponsored team; he takes the deal, and leaves his brother behind to race on his own dime. However, when an accident takes Trip out of the running on the supercross circuit, he and K.C. set aside their differences as Trip helps coach his older brother so he can succeed in his drive to the championship. Made with the cooperation of a leading supercross race promoter, Supercross: The Movie also stars Sophia Bush and Cameron Richardson as the brothers' love interests, and Robert Carradine as a determined race coach.

You could see the same thing for free -- with higher production values and snappier dialogue -- watching X Games coverage on ESPN.

Like the drive-in classics of Roger Corman and Samuel Z. Arkoff, this develops the principal characters and conflicts with just enough depth and keeps the narrative moving at a brisk pace.

Only the most devoted MX fetishists could like the film, because it doesn't offer a scrap of nourishment for the uninitiated.

Director Steve Boyum, a former motocross driver, hacks his racing footage to incomprehensible pieces and, from the looks of the meager, jumpy narrative, did the same to the script.

August 23, 2005

The writing is abysmal, the acting wouldn't pass muster in a high school play, and the direction by erstwhile stuntman Steve Boyum (Timecop: The Berlin Decision) is positively sleep-inducing between cycle jumps.

An example of how too much of anything will get annoying -- including VVRRRROOOOOOOMMM and flying bikes.

Audience Reviews for Supercross

As a motocross/supercross fan & rider, I was really disappointed in this movie. Not even an hour into the movie, both brothers have girlfriends...really? There seemed to be more romance than racing in the entire movie. The supercross side to the movie wasn't a breath of fresh air either. There was just something about it that seemed so wrong...maybe it was the fact that they put Channing Tatum and Aaron Carter on dirt bikes and called them "racers"...or it could be because they made a privateers' racing career look easy. Winning against professional factory riders? Really? Supercross the movie is a huge let down.

A movie that tries to be amazingly cool, but tries so hard that it fails!

Loud, dumb race movie, the two lead actors have an okay chemistry as brothers and are easy on the eye but that's all this has going for it.
