Critic Reviews for She's So Lovely
Based on Cassavetes pere script, this Cassavetes fils meditation on love and madness is a truly curioisity item, lacking the master's profound ideas and rich subtext; 20 years ago, it would have starred Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk.
What [Nick Cassavetes] understands is that if you want to see true weirdness, you don't look along skid row, where the motives are pretty easy to understand, but out in suburbia, where those green lawns can surround human time bombs.
An acting exercise, and an intriguing and entertaining one at that.
Dreadful attempt at romantic comedy
Better than it oughta be, but not much more than a wacky character sketch.
Audience Reviews for She's So Lovely
It's been said before but I'll say it again here..this movie likely suffers because the elder Cassavettes didn't have the chance to film it. Cassavettes had a knack for bringing out great humanity out of his actors. I don't think his son succeeds here.
The first half of this film plays out so ideally that I expected it to be a favorite. It falters a lot more in the second half, but it's a totally satisfying movie overall. It draws its audience into a strangely orchestrated story and takes them into genuinely unexpected places. The characters are well-drawn and interesting, and Cassavetes' direction has a nice texture to it. However, this is an actor-driven movie, and these actors are up to the challenge of carrying it. Robin Wright Penn, John Travolta and especially Sean Penn are all brilliant here. Really stunning performances.
