A good cast, if you can forget for a moment the protagonist, Joseph Fiennes. [Full Review in Spanish]

A nothing movie. Gossamer-thin, the slightest breeze will blow it from our collective memories.
January 1, 2000
A thin, predictable plot that is only carried by the portrayal of people that we revere in our history books.

As overrated as Shakespeare himself.

Don't let the hype fool ya, cause this puppy pees just like the rest of them!

This romantic farce has a talented cast and energy to spare, but somehow the ingredients don't burn as brightly as one would expect from such promising ingredients.

Not even Stoppard is Shakespeare, and the end result resembles one of Neil Simon's middlebrow romps more than it does As You Like It.

At first, the breakneck pace is entertaining (all these people knocking themselves out for our pleasure), but it soon becomes evident just how inane a film this is.

Although Shakespeare in Love benefits from a delightful screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard -- and a flattering one, for viewers who can congratulate themselves on recognizing this or that tatter of the Bard -- the film's virtues peter out.

Sniping at what's already been celebrated as a major national triumph always looks not-quite-cricket, but Madden's film is transparently one of those things that the British Do So Well, and the Americans fund so handsomely.

I just wish that the script wasn't so insistent on showing off. Shakespeare, even when he kowtowed to the peasants, knew when to quit.
February 24, 2013
Entertaining, witty and acutely funny, with the ability to appeal to more than Shakespeare buffs. But for real fans of the Bard, it's a glorious treat that's smart and humorous, with highly appealing performances all round.

Huzzah! What a delightful romantic comedy director Madden doth make!
February 20, 2008
A cleverly scripted reworking of a period comedy.
June 18, 2012
Wittily written, richly set and vigorously directed by John Madden, the film succeeds at pretty well every direction it cares to turn.

....the echoes of passionate Shakespeare will linger in the memory and the most pleasant memories of the spectator. [Full review in Spanish]
January 1, 2000
The film walks a tightrope between Pythonesque satire and heart-felt romance, and generally keeps its footing.
February 28, 2018
Shakespeare in Love lives up to its name with its joyous sensuality.

...very well calculated and balanced. [Full Review in Spanish]

Outside the romance, it's also got great depth and insight into the nature of showbusiness.
