Less a documentary than a feature-length piece of clickbait, the true-crime sports movie Screwball offers the most superficial look imaginable at the steroids scandal surrounding Alex Rodriguez and Biogenesis.

When the grown men often act like children, it feels like overkill to have children portraying the grown men.

Screwball is a truly original home run in documentary storytelling.

Screwball is a madcap story of capitalism, South Beach hucksters, broken rules, shady characters, bad medicine and good drugs. In short: it's a story as American as baseball and apple pie.

"Screwball" is a surprisingly fun doc.

Coming from someone who doesn't particularly care for baseball or documentaries on the subject in general, "Screwball" is a home run.

Screwball is an entertaining way to bring a very serious scandal to light. There is a lot of information to take in such as the who is who and who said what, so it can be a lot to keep up with and it does move fast at times.

A deliciously snarky tale of corruption and malfeasance most foul that could have only gone down in South Florida. Corben directs this juicy yarn like the smart aleck in class who can't seem to stay out of trouble.
September 20, 2018
Thanks to Corben's delightful gimmick of using children ... in the many recreations of actual events, the unlikely insanity of what transpired is given a surreal flair.

Screwball suggests that even if you remember the broad contours of the saga, you might not recall the unbridled seediness and bumbling incompetence of virtually everyone involved.
March 26, 2019
With a hysterically entertaining approach, Screwball is a must-watch documentary for anybody who loves the game of baseball.

Clearly, [Billy] Corben had fun directing this film, weaving an odyssey of idiotic criminality with a narrative full of joy and style. [Full review in Spanish]

Screwball feels like a farce spinning toward its chaotic conclusion, with the absurdist echoes of frenetic Scorsese thrillers adding a delicious layer of paranoia.

Covers the doping scandal without fear or favor, interested in the kinds of bit players behind the headlines whose stories are often way more interesting than the athletes that have fallen from grace.

More entertaining than a dozen Major League Baseball games stacked on top of one another, Billy Corben's doc looking at the sport's doping scandal of 2013 is a 'roided-out riot.

Another masterpiece of wild and woolly Floridiana from Florida's documentarian laureate, Billy Corben.

A smart revisiting of baseball's A-Rod steroid scandal, a little too gimmicky for its own good

The saddest thing about Screwball isn't that it's eye-opening and infuriating; it's that its duplicity and villainy feel commonplace, if not inevitable.

If you preferred the scumbag version of ARod, you're likely to enjoy Screwball, which looks back on the Biogenesis scandal

Proving once again that truth is much stranger than fiction... Screwball is no home run, it is still a solid base hit of a film.
