Charles (Evan Peters) is a high school senior with physical challenges, Vickie (Juno Temple) is a troubled runaway turning tricks at a truck stop, and Skid (Kevin Alejandro) is her dangerously psychotic pimp, who has a huge chip on his shoulder. He continuously harasses Charles and Vickie but things take a menacing turn when the two embark on a road trip up the California coast to photograph lighthouses. A bland and unremarkable tale of sad souls and dead-end circumstances from first-time feature director Tony Aloupis.

To write off "Safelight" as just another generic romantic teen drama about wounded souls who find healing in each other's arms wouldn't do justice to its baffling ineptitude.

Uneven would be a kind word for "Safelight."

First-time filmmaker Tony Aloupis, formerly frontman of the New Jersey rock band Shadows of Dreams, serves up Americana like a stale slice of apple pie.

Everything in writer-director Tony Aloupis' "Safelight" feels telegraphed.

Does the world really need another indie film about lost souls living quiet lives of desperation in a heaven-forsaken one-horse town?

Audience Reviews for Safelight

A formulaic and stereotypical coming-of-age love story, Safelight is quite boring and monotonous. The film follows a gas station clerk who strikes up a friendship with a hooker who offers to help him with a school project by driving him to lighthouses to photograph. The plot is painfully predictable and the characters are extraordinarily cliché: the hooker with a heart of gold, the soulful artist, etc. And the sets are remarkably bland and pedestrian. Incredibly trite, Safelight is a by-the-numbers teen drama that lacks any originality.
