Subpar action drama filled with cliches. Overacting, poorly-scripted dialogue, implausible scenarios, unlikable protagonists, and an illogical antagonist.

The best thrilling movie ever made!

In my humble opinion one of the most underrated movies ever made in the action genre Runaway Train is a white knuckler. When Runaway Train was produced, the action genre was undergoing a change from character-driven movies to pyrotechnics-based flicks. Of the thrillers developed after this one, only a select few -- Die Hard and perhaps one or two others -- have achieved this level of tautness without compromising the intelligence of the plot. Best of all, in more than a decade since its release, Runaway Train has aged exceptionally well. It is just as compelling today as it was during the winter of 1985-86. Don't miss this great action film for anything.

An action movie that gets better as it goes and finishes very well. The big thing is the story and suspense, don't expect much in clever dialog. Casting Jon Voight as the protagonist was odd in my opinion when they could have cast a lead guy like Burt Reynolds or Jack Nicholson in their prime. Maybe they turned it down. Voight just doesn't look like a heartless felon to me, although his performance was fine.

i love this film, its a real brainless guy's movie but it has a cool story about an intense guy who wants to live and die on the edge. he escapes from prison and steals a runaway train, with disasterous results. my favourite part is when he gives these intense motivational speeches. so, break out your vodka on a cold siberian night and watch this trash

4/5. Runaway Train boasts some amazing stunts, really fantastic shots, and a great performance from Jon Voight. Eric Roberts is pretty insufferable, but the movie as a whole keeps your eyes glued to the scree,

Jon Voight always plays such a great psycho. The nihilism and viciousness of his character make this movie as engaging as it is. It's otherwise an entertaining action/thriller, with some great, intense sequences.

Thrilling and funny, it's an all or nothing film.

Jon Voight's brilliant and frightening performance is the only reason I rate this 3 stars. If only Kurosawa could have made this as planned. It would be a completely different and deeper film. The 80s dance beat score is all wrong. Eric Roberts is annoying and over the top with the accent. Where was the director to notice that after climbing through miles of sewer, falling into a freezing river, walking for miles in the snow, Roberts next scene shows his hair, face and clothes still looking like he stepped out of GQ 1985? I'd love to see this remade by either Japanese or Korean film makers who have a handle on the tone it should have.

Runaway Train wastes Jon Voight's talent and an interesting premise with an almost uneventful, dull script.

One of the better Cannon Films in their immersive & infamous catalogue about two prisoners breaking out & stealing a train that becomes an uncontrollable Runaway Train.

Quiet violent & edgy for its time & despite its many scripting flaws it's genuinely engaging & fast paced throughout.

Staring Jon Voight, Eric Roberts & Rebecca DeMorney in solid roles. This could have been directed better but perfect for a Friday Night movie on TV.

A forgotten minor classic. What should be average low-budget schlock is elevated by strong central performances and an affecting score.

Forceful and impressive movie, brilliantly executed and acted, with pretty descent philosophical content and mysterious charm about it.

An entertaining ride as two escaped convicts from an Alaskan prison end up on a speeding train they can't stop after the engineer suffers a heart attack. Have to wonder if Shawshank lifted their prison escape method from this one. One of Golan Globus' finest.

I think Jon Voight, and Eric Roberts made their best role in this movie. It is not easy to outbreak human emotion in the tiny cabin of the train but the film did that. Film worth to watch.

Smart, intense, and great action and scenery. There's the air of foreign melodrama but it works.

Not a perfect picture by any means, the memorable Manny, played by Jon Voight, really steals the show making a mediocre movie into an entertaining train ride (literally).

The movie is one of the little gems from the past. Jon Voight in one of his best performances of his career. Improbable but plausible circumstances find three people trapped on a runaway train headed for disaster. The drama between Voight, Roberts and DeMornay on the train is raw and intense. I recommend the movie.

A solid but conventional action thriller like many others made in the 1980s, oscillating unevenly between efficient moments and scenes that simply do not work - and even if relying on a lot of coincidences and with a ridiculous villain, it offers great performances from Voight and Roberts.
