Robert the Bruce can certainly find an audience with people who feel compelled to check out any movie related to Scottish history. For everyone else, the film is worth watching if you don't mind seeing an inferior spinoff to Braveheart.

Ponderous Braveheart "sequel" has sporadic graphic violence.

Earnest and overwrought historical drama undone by its own ambition.

In the final act, I started to get flashbacks from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi where the Ewoks are fighting the stormtroopers.

Robert the Bruce misses so many opportunities and it seems that a lot of that lies in the restraints of the budget. The costumes look wonderful, the Scottish accents are mostly ok...

[It] all seems to promise far more than this modest drama delivers.

For a film about one of history's most renowned warriors, it's oddly lacking heart.

Angus Macfadyen clearly felt like this was a passion project. Unfortunately, it doesn't really reflect in the overall execution.

Robert the Bruce allows Angus Macfadyen to reprise the role he was born to play. However, despite his fine work, the film fails to be the sum of its parts.

It is hard not to immediately draw comparisons to Outlaw King due to the films' proximities. However, when the former is markedly stronger in terms of scripting, acting, and entertainment quality, it does Robert the Bruce no favours.

Angus Macfadyen may have made his intentions for the film clear off-screen, but the finished product seems devoid of such momentum.

In some ways the tone befits the subject, but this cinema of existential ennui is all too frequently a bore to behold.

Two hours has rarely seemed as never-ending as "Robert the Bruce."

Unless you are a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, or perhaps part of the Macfayden clan, you're better off letting this particular version of history get lost in the sands of time.

[With] accents that range from passable to comically bad...

Robert the Bruce places too much emphasis on the secondary characters. The film could have been titled "Morag the Widow Saves Scotland."

I'm not sure I've ever been more bored watching a movie as I was watching this one.
April 23, 2020
There isn't enough raw power to the film. Its talky idea of audience engagement only inspires a desire to rewatch "Braveheart."

It's a bland story with no deep connection to medieval Scotland.

Sadly, the draggy pace simply underlines the sense of a worthwhile idea poorly executed.
