It is not quite as stirring as it wants to be, but Gray's picture brims with passion and is still as accomplished as any historical drama worth watching.

As a clear passion project of Macfadyen... it's satisfying to see something so personal as this cross the finish line, make it out to a wide international audience, and ultimately be a film worth all of that investment.

In "Robert The Bruce," which is directed by Richard Gray and written by Eric Belgau and Angus Macfadyen, the story being told is less about myth and more about reality.

Light on action, but strong performances throughout in this relaxed historical biopic.

'Robert the Bruce' is an enjoyable sort-of-but-not-exactly spinoff of 'Braveheart.'

The use of traditional music lends additional authenticity; Mel Elias's score is excellent. Writers Macfadyen and Eric Belgau have done Robert the Bruce's epic struggle for independence cinematic justice...

Robert the Bruce's ambitions are let down by a drifting, oddly fractured narrative, predictable plotting.

[Bruce's] joints may be stiffer than his resolve; but, in placing the warrior temporarily aside, Macfadyen and his director have helped us more clearly to see the man.

ROBERT THE BRUCE finds itself caught between two stools - and each saps impact from the other. The story, however, gathers pace, delivering a rousing end to an intimate tale with a different flavour to most historical war epics.

Macfadyen's central performance is measured and gives some weight to the sections trying to characterise Robert the Bruce.

Macfadyen's full-blooded performance and the moral heft of his story proves a pleasing antidote to the other blood-thirsty takes on Celtic rebellion.

Braveheart fans might not find the follow-up they want, but viewers in the market for a quietly intelligent historical drama will be more than satisfied.

The film has an awkward structure that blurs the narratives. But it coalesces into an unusually thoughtful exploration of power, war and the desire for independence.
