This dragon tale goes down in flames.

It's the sort of movie script sci-fi and fantasy fans read about on the internet. The sort of script that gets championed by some eccentric producer before sinking back into the eternal oblivion of development hell.

For all of its design and special-effects artistry, "Reign of Fire" is seldom convincing -- only slightly more alive than the silly 2000 "Dungeons & Dragons."

"Is that dragon's breath?" a child asks Quinn, as a fetid wind rumples his hair. Yes it is, and boy does it stink.

It's painful to watch actors like McConaughey and Bale, who showed so much potential at one time in their careers, shamelessly overact and spout inane dialogue.

McConaughey's facial hair is his best acting prop: It seems to exists only to trap spittle after eating roasted meat.

One regards Reign of Fire with awe. What a vast enterprise has been marshaled in the service of such a minute idea.

Prior to seeing Reign of Fire my expectations were that the dragons looked great, but the plot looked kind of cheesy. It turns out that in this case, my expectations were dead right.

The sole spark of humanity comes from Matthew McConaughey, whose gung-ho glee brings a hint of excitement and adventure to this hugely unsatisfying feature.

A rather tepid Mad Max clone that'll delight school boys but not stretch far in terms of appeal beyond that.

Silly, loud and goofy.

It works mostly although it drags a little in the middle.

The film is all special effects and testosteronic bellowing by Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale.

Plodding sci-fi dragon disaster tale is OK for older kids.

The filmmakers might have benefited from more sleep before penning the script.

Garners so much potential for a large exciting universe, but is just a waste of acting talent, special effects and money

The main problem with the film (and there's a lot of competition there) is the writing - or lack thereof.

The filmmakers take the story so seriously Reign of Fire becomes the dullest movie imaginable about fire-breathing lizards. It's Godzilla written by Strindberg.

Definitely in the guilty pleasure B-movie category, Reign of Fire is so incredibly inane that it is laughingly enjoyable.
