Unfortunately, actress Dench is not at the center of the film. The flatly told tale offers too many flashbacks and bland reenactments of young Joan Stanley (Sophie Cookson) being a KGB agent.

Director Trevor Nunn has opted for the early-bird special filter here, presenting a story that should be thrilling and investing as one that's too tepid and safe to successfully connect with the masses.

The only bomb being dropped in this WWII spy thriller is crappy, uninspired film-making.

Dame Judi Dench is compelling as a spy in this drama, but we wish this film, billed as a thriller, had been more exciting. It's more of an anti-war film, but told through the life and romantic liaisons of a young woman...

... largely devoid of the intrigue that usually accompanies such weighty topics.

Red Joan feels like it was a middling British TV drama pilot that ran too long and they sold it as a movie instead.

The woman the writers based the character of Joan on deserves better than this handsomely made, yet stiff and inert drama.

Dench does what she can, but this is a dull and plodding affair, devoid of anything even remotely compelling.

My disappointment with Red Joan is mainly that there wasn't a more multi-dimensional story about this woman, more danger and intrigue woven into her duality...

Uneven flashbacks and forth are seriously distracting, the pace is slow and the execution flimsy.

dragged on and felt overly long.

For a movie about an intelligent female Cambridge science student and communist sympathizer, this movie sounds interesting. Too bad it is awfully dull.

...Red Joan ultimately falls well short of its potential.

There is no surprise, there is no emotion and, above all, there is hardly any interest in delving into the facts presented. [Full review in Spanish]

There's little worth in simply retelling a story that only speaks as loud as a written word - we have Wikipedia for that.

This adaptation is much too colorless to satisfy even the most enthusiastic of espionage buffs.

Dench delivers some fine speeches in defence of her character's younger days, but her role is exceedingly limited.

Suffocatingly mediocre, a political thriller with a bizarre disinterest in the inherent politics of the story, or anything that could be considered remotely thrilling.

Red Joan itself is reportedly based on the story of Melita Norwood, who passed the Soviets' information on the West's nuclear development. Sadly, Norwood's Wikipedia page is more of a thrilling yarn than most of Red Joan.

Red Joan looks the part of a prestige picture, but it's actually a hollow mimic that lacks soul.
