An impressive showcase for Phillips both in front of and behind the camera, showing a considerable restraint both in playing Shonzi and writing for him.

Rainbow Time is about two brothers trying to achieve a semblance of control through the lens of a camera, where any insecurity can be spliced, edited, and erased.

Phillips - as both director and actor - has trouble with the film's key character; he's so insufferable, he upsets the delicate balance they seem to be going for.

A movie that's admirably provocative, even if at times it seems to be more interested in being challenging than being entertaining.

Lynskey is a luminous counterpoint to Phillips's energetic earthiness, but they can't lift a story with so much killjoy ballast.

Linas Phillips's contrived sense of follow-through betrays the truthfulness of his initial characterizations.

Phillips has been making movies for a while now, but Rainbow Time is by far his most fully realized, thanks in no small part to his bizarre, inimitable central performance.

Lynskey gives a winning performance here as a New Agey peacemaker straining to be tolerant of Shonzi's quirks and perhaps too optimistic about the prospects of making him more sensitive.
