This western features Robert Mitchum as an Indian scout who happens upon an unlikely family cabined up in the Great Northwest. It's an intelligent, tasteful drama.

Mood of the picture is pleasant but is so even that interest isn't too strong.

Rachel and the Stranger may not be history precisely, but as a cinematic footnote it certainly is far more palatable than most texts.

It's a real charmer, held together by Mitchum's electric presence as the laconic interloper with a gently roving eye and a winning way with his guitar and songs.

The leisurely told cornball tale of frontier love makes for a pleasant and unassuming film.

Audience Reviews for Rachel and the Stranger

A predictable movie. A widower needs a women to help run his farm, so "buys" one (by paying off her debt) and treats her like dirt. Of course she is everything the widower ever wanted, and they all live happily everafter.
