Yet one more rare gem is excavated from the multi-layered past of cinema by me. It is one of the best neo-noirs filmed after the 70's with tremendously authentic atmosphere of the 40's. All necessary attributes are here: crooks, gangsters, corrupted policemen, femme fatale, conspiracy, and an anti-hero who ultimately breaks his own code of not 'taking sides with anyone' to help an irresistible beauty as he fells in love with her. And, of course, the iconic mood. It is also one of the best roles of Joe Pesci and probably his best as the lead. This is the perfect gift for lovers of 'black cinema'.

Wasted potential. If the script were better, this would be a classic. As it stands, it's a curiosity. Pesci does the best he can with what he's got, and it's well shot. That's about all I can say about it.

Really think this is a classic.

A very different role for Pesci. It showed that he was more than a wise guy or a crash test burglar. For some reason, I thought this was going to be more comical, like a spoof or satire of 1940's cinema. In fact the film is played very straight and it's not a bad film. You just have to be in the mood for it.

Joe Pesci did good acting , but the direction and the script wasn't that great .

Searching for something to watch in the summer, when nothing is on, but The Public Eye turned out to be an interesting movie. Particularly liked the attention to detail in the architecture, autos, clothing, etc.

Everything unfolds with pedestrian, formulaic predictability.

Excellent take on the film noir genre from the point of view of a scandal mag paparazzi photographer. Pesci superbly plays the grubby photographer in way over his head and dodging bullets left and right and always coming out just ahead. Deserved a far higher profile and appreciation than it ever received theatrically.

If you are a mobster movie fan, no introduction is required for Joe Pesci - the cult legend! This time around, he plays the shutterbug who will go to any end for a sensational photo! Amazing movie for all photographers and "slice of life" lovers.

An extremely solid drama. Some of Pesci's best work, simultaneously crafty, sarcastic, funny, and also selfless for the sake of his art. I highly recommend it.

Probably would have rated a half-star higher if it was filmed in black-and-white.

Fun noir 40's paparazzi flick.

I was shocked by how good this movie is. Would be appreciated especially by journalism/photography buffs, I think.

Great Pesci. Great character. Great story. And of course, excellent photography.

So-so story, but has a nice look, and the score is excellent (I actually own the soundtrack...on cassette! Killer...)
