Private Road (1971)
Critic Reviews for Private Road
Whatever its limitations -- and there are some -- it tries very hard to get near to what things are like here and now, what pressures people face and what they do about them.
Well worth a look for its odd mixture of romanticism and scepticism about society's future.
[Writer-director Barney Platts-Mills] is undeniably a considerable talent and the film surely deserves better than the limited release it is currently getting.
The direction has a kind of authority: it doesn't merely promise, it performs. What it performs, or rather displays, I find apotropaic. But that is far better than feeling indifferent.
Barney Platts-Mills' 1971 film is undoubtedly one of the great lost British masterpieces of the 1970s.
