At its best, Primal calls to mind Adam Sandler's Netflix originals, where it's clear the actor is just going on vacation to different locals and hoping the creatives around him can put together a movie from the exploits.

Despite its flaws, I warmed to Primal as it neared its close, and not just because it was nearly at a close. It's enjoyable nonsense that becomes weirdly compulsive viewing.

Primal contains an awful lot of stupid, but the sound is so muddy it's hard to catch much dialog. At least we have that small mercy to be thankful for.

Nic Cage is trapped on a boat with a terrorist and an albino CGI jaguar. That is an amazing premise! If only we could see it. Bad camera work and choppy editing are ruining B movies.

A lifeless game of cat-and-mouse-and-jaguar.

Despite the "Cage vs. jaguar" hook that is being relied on to sell the movie, there isn't a whole lot of gnarly animal action.

Primal simply refuses to dive into the wackiness of the premise, and a generally straight-faced presentation is not what most people want from a movie that features Nicolas Cage, Famke Janssen, a homicidal maniac, and a bunch of wild animals on a boat.

Face it, tiger: Primal is boring.

As always, there's Cage, and he's in peak Cage-osity here, trying to give the blandness that surrounds him some much needed thespian spice.

There is a limit to the redemption Nicolas Cage can grant a terrible movie, and "Primal" is it.

This thriller has a fun premise, but it feels both too lazy and too serious; rather than really playing with the concept, the film does little more than let loose cannon Cage carry the load.

This is one of the unfortunate examples where so much energy evidently went into devising the admittedly nutball premise that there was virtually nothing left in the tank when it came time for the pesky task of executing it.

This is a slapdash affair...that cops from everything from "The Silence of the Lambs" to "Snakes on a Plane..." the story is such a patchwork of other genre films it makes the act of watching seem like going through the motions.

It's the sort of humdrum thriller you half-watch on TV while folding laundry; any hope that Cage might do something memorable enough to momentarily pull your attention entirely away from your socks is in vain.

It's more brutal than thrilling... I think the plot summary is probably the most tongue-in-cheek about the way it plays out.
November 8, 2019
The only thrills are of the guilty-pleasure variety, although there's little camp value in the mechanical script or the technical incompetence.

Something this inherently silly shouldn't feel so tediously routine.

Primal is like Life of Pi meets The Silence of the Lambs, only way less fun than that sounds.

Unfortunately, even by the relaxed standards of trash cinema, "Primal" is dispiritingly tame.

The latest in Nicolas Cage's seemingly endless stream of B-movie potboilers [is] ludicrously implausible-as well as unpleasantly claustrophobic.
