Dramedy about a depressed middle-ager tries to unravel the mysteries of life.

Phil manages to answer a lot of pertinent philosophical and psychological questions while also being ridiculously funny and not without a small fragment of hope.

Mazur's gimmicky script isn't up to the level of the acting, which carries the picture despite the wobbly comedy-tragedy tightrope Mazur makes the talented cast walk.

Making a movie about suicide and keeping it inside Mr. Kinnear's light-comedic wheelhouse would be a lot to ask of any director, never mind a first at-bat... Phil isn't a home run, exactly. But you could rule it a double to left.

Greg Kinnear combines acting with directing in a role that exudes nice-guy-ness that few other performers can duplicate as well.

I kind of appreciate that it was trying to take a different take on suicide... Unfortunately, Stephen Mazur's script just doesn't work.
July 19, 2019
Tired and unconvincing middle-brow sitcom-like dramedy.

Greg Kinnear directs himself as a dentist with suicidal tendencies in a bizarre dark comedy. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
July 12, 2019
This dramedy (Kinnear's directing debut) has its touching, thoughtful moments, but mostly it relies on a creaky old sitcom-like "lie" plot that douses nearly every potential laugh.

A clunky an contrived misfire. Even the charismatic Greg Kinnear can't rise above its inane screenplay.

Character development is non-existent, and isolated scenes resonate with occasional whimsy, but they don't add up to a satisfying whole. The adjective that best describes Phil is preposterous.

July 9, 2019
The movie is about how he learns to love life again by giving himself over to his make-believe alter ego, and if Kinnear had pushed that idea further, it might have jelled.
July 9, 2019
The film wants to aimlessly pander to the opposing sides of levity and heartbreak but fails to instill any genuine ingredients of grief, sorrow or reflection to go along with its weakened naughty streak of wit.

July 5, 2019
The movie resolves with a degree of grace and humanity that eludes its first two acts, but at that point there's precious little use for it.

July 5, 2019
The only thing grimmer than the material in "Phil" is its execution.
July 5, 2019
Merely competent performances from talented thesps don't speak promisingly of Kinnear's directing potential.
July 5, 2019
... manages some moments of emotional honesty about starting over, although it sidesteps the creepy nature of Phil's scheme, preferring to pass off his actions as quirky charm.
July 5, 2019
An affable but profoundly bland dark comedy that depicts an existential crisis with soft philosophizing and some jokes.

[T]he story is an aggressively lazy situational comedy.

If not for Mazur's script dropping the ball, this might have been just worthy of a mild recommendation. Kinnear, however has a future behind the camera if he wants it.
