In Italian with English subtitles

A movie about trying to fit in and hold on to -- or choose a new -- identity when you're the outsider and the insiders look like they have a great life. Like all movies from other countries, if you like their sense of humor (in this case Italian) you'll like the comedy aspects of this movie. Here we have the a classic example of Italian humor based on social gaffes, absurd misunderstandings, and a bit of slapstick. The overall message is a sober one about survival when trying to gain entry into a new "pack" after you've given up on your own.

This captures the socio-politics of north vs. south (Swiss/Italian)in a romantic, comedic way.

A film I saw several times in the theater when it first came out, 34 years ago! That says someting for my feelings for this movie.

A migrant worker doesn't fit in to his host country (Switzerland), but has changed too much to return to his native country (Italy). The film traces his misadventures and search for identity. The script quality varies. An unusual movie. Enjoyable light comedy. (Italian and German with English subtitles).

This movie does an amazing job of portraying life as a working-class illegal immigrant in a decadent, bourgeois, and just plain unfriendly country (Switzerland).

This is a really great movie. It's very funny, Manfredi is really good in it.

Intenso, struggente, bellissimo. Un Manfredi che ci lascia una sensazione amara e dolce nel cuore. Nino davvero unico. Ottimo film, con un grande cast e una regia perfetta.

In "Bread and Chocolate", Nino(Nino Manfredi) is an Italian citizen, living and working as a waiter in the promised land of Switzerland. He is hopeful to send for his family and is competing for a permanent position at a restaurant with an immigrant from Turkey. Nino is trying so hard to keep his nose clean, that he delays in notifying the authorities about the body he discovers in the woods. However, he is summoned into a meeting with the police on a relatively minor matter of public urination...

"Bread and Chocolate" is a poignant and gentle comedy of manners about trying to succeed in a strange country and the conflict between making a better living there and the ensuing homesickness. While it does not have the impact of "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul"(which was made around the same time), this movie still has plenty to say on the subject of immigration and assimilation.
