Critic Reviews for Only
Only is frustratingly underdeveloped as a thematic/conversation piece.
One of those stories that's guaranteed to elicit strong reactions that will likely be split along gender lines.
The central performances and the visuals of Only make it more enjoyable than it could have been, but in the end, I wish the film explored more of its central focus and theme, instead of hitting the same beats of being stuck and controlled.
Only is a slow-burn of a story that relies more on atmosphere than action, with mixed results.
Can't say [Takashi] Dosher is an accomplished filmmaker-yet, but this movie hits a nerve. Also, coming from a male director there is a misogynist undertone that just doesn't feel right.
