Critic Reviews for Nana
Sam Goldwyn brilliantly launches a new star in a not so brilliant vehicle.
Through Miss Sten's efficiency and charm and the splendid portrayals of such players as Mr. Bennett, Mr. Owen and Mr. Grant, it offers a fair measure of entertainment.
Arzner treats her heroine sympathetically, while Gregg Toland's lustrous photography makes a fair stab at exoticising her into a Garbo/Dietrich figure. And her lacklustre reputation notwithstanding, Sten is surprisingly affecting.
The picture is stodgy, pretentious, and utterly without the Zola verve. One can't quite decide about Anna. Maybe it was the wrong picture, or maybe she really can't act.
Miss Sten is capricious, child-like, cruel and destructive, yet with that soft, underlying promise of the flesh which renders her all-powerful.
