Biopic about artist's relationship with his bullying mother.

It all feels like an uneventful, overly stuffy approach to a painter who was, after all, considered outlandishly strange.

When done with imagination, a good biopic can really delve under the skin of its subject. If Mrs Lowry & Son is any indication, however, it's that Lowry's personality had already been expressed far more eloquently on canvas.

Under the direction of theatre veteran Adrian Noble, it's an often stiff and unadventurous affair.

The film, by illustrious theatre director Adrian Noble, making a rare foray into cinema, never really attempts to smudge its origins as a radio play. This somehow both enables and disables the narrative, making it at times almost laughably ponderous.

As impressive as Spall and Redgrave are, however, both individually and when in the throes of a heated wrangle of power and emotion, it's not quite enough to carry a whole film.

Mrs Lowry & Son features a script by Martyn Hesford that feels more like a radio or stage play; without any fresh insight to invigorate the clichés of downtrodden artistic lives, the characters feel both familiar and stale.

Both Spall and Redgrave feel stifled and stiff-jointed, hemmed in by a thin, shallow-focus script that betrays its origins as a radio play all too easily.

A one-note and strangely listless work that brings together two of the most immensely talented actors working today.

The script, by Martyn Hesford, gets bogged down in repetition. And Adrian Noble's direction leans too heavily on a score that is as frilly and prim as one of Mrs Lowry's lace doilies.

It cushions itself with needless amounts of nagging music, and winds up giving us a dainty little tour of the Lowry museum in Salford, where we can presumably expect the DVD to be sold until kingdom come.

Unfortunately, and rather like the critical reception that Lowry's work received for much of his lifetime, it's getting only a grudging cheer from me. Matchstalk men, indeed.

Mrs Lowry & Son ... is stuck in the mire of the worst aspects of their relationship and the monotonous narrative.

Spall brings muffled humanity to Lowry but, thus housebound, he remains a sketch rather than a portrait.

Captivating but overly sentimental at times.

Mrs. Lowry and Son has an appealing old-school charm and two performances that make it worth seeing.

A fascinating if sometimes repetitive account of an emotionally abusive relationship between mother and son. The outdoor scenes that reference Lowry's paintings lighten the claustrophobia.

This is a slightly uneven, yet beautifully observed, moving and expertly acted biopic which acts as a fitting tribute to one of the greatest and most enigmatic British artists of the twentieth century.

On the screen, Mrs Lowry and Son, much like one of Lowry's own paintings, is a wee gem on a small canvas, full of loving details within its apparently simple and unadorned style.
