Movie Info

Whose face ravaged, grotesque is in the mirror? Surely it's not that of Fanny Skeffington, the prettiest woman in New York. Fanny always used her beauty to manipulate her way through life. She's encouraged dozens of suitors, even after her marriage. But now diphtheria has robbed her of her only attribute. And without her looks, she's lost. Bette Davis earned her eighth Best Actress Oscar nomination portraying Fanny.

Critic Reviews for Mr. Skeffington

All Critics (7)

Bette Davis does an admirable job, as does Claude Rains. [Full review in Spanish]

September 17, 2019 | Full Review…

A squishy tearjerker melodrama that questions how to handle life when beauty fades, for someone who vainly lived for her beauty.

October 15, 2010 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

On target Warner super soaper features standouts Bette Davis and Claude Rains.

March 16, 2009 | Rating: 5/5

Largely forgotten and for good reason, interesting now as a mile-marker on Davis' lonesome road to irrelevance.

July 25, 2007 | Rating: 0.5/4 | Full Review…

Sherman conduz bem a narrativa, que abrange três décadas das vidas de seus personagens, e é auxiliado na tarefa por excelentes atuações de Davis, Abel e Rains.

April 24, 2006 | Rating: 4/5

This is a star vehicle in extremis.

Audience Reviews for Mr. Skeffington

Davis is absolutely outstanding in her Oscar-nominated performance - as well as Rains, who was also nominated -, and the most remarkable in this excellent film is Sherman's amazing direction as he fluidly conducts us through more than twenty years of his characters' lives.

A wonderful showcase for the talents of Bette Davis and yet another opportunity for her to play a most distasteful character.
