Mr. Right (2016)

Critic Consensus: Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick work well together, but Mr. Right is too much of a tonal jumble to take advantage of their chemistry.

Movie Info

Hyperactive at the best of times, Martha (Anna Kendrick; Pitch Perfect) has gone full-on manic since her latest breakup. She babbles, parties like a monster, cooks everything in sight - and is looking to do something terrible when she meets Francis (Sam Rockwell; The Way Way Back). To anyone else, Francis's approach would come across as creepy, but Martha can't help but be intrigued. They seem a perfect match: she's bananas, he's bananas... except he's a deadly sort of bananas. He's a professional assassin. Francis is a hitman with a cause: he unexpectedly kills the people ordering the hits. Just as Martha begins to realize her new beau wasn't joking when he said he had to step out for a moment to shoot someone, things start heating up for Francis. His services are solicited by a dubious client who's being sought by an equally dubious FBI agent (Tim Roth; Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs). As the bodies pile up, Martha needs to decide whether to flee or join in the mayhem.

While it's supposed to add up to a witty marriage between romance and anarchy, it's so light on moral implications that it's just tacky.

Rockwell and Kendrick are great together, but the movie never quite marries the cute romance and the bloody killings. Most of the time the two leads appear to be on their own in a completely separate movie.

Mr. Right isn't a bad movie as much as it is two-and-a-half, maybe three bad movies playing all at the same time.

"Mr. Right" hires two charismatic lead actors, Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell, then expects them to carry a movie with almost no compelling reason to exist.

April 11, 2016 | Rating: 1.5/4 | Full Review…

Rockwell, who literally dances his way through battle scenes with guns and knives, hasn't had a role this satisfying in years.

The ludicrous action-flick plot slows to a crawl whenever Kendrick and Rockwell aren't on screen (although RZA has a fun cameo as a kindhearted gunman), but the unlikely duo make this candy-colored carnival of blood and romance hard to resist.

Audience Reviews for Mr. Right

An okay film about a reformed hit man and his attempts to find love while still being a target. Doesn't quite work.

Mr. Right is a quirky and fun black comedy that's full of laughs. Unlucky in love, Martha McKay discovers that she's dating a hitman who's gone rogue and is now killing the criminals who hired him. Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick have terrific chemistry and deliver great performances. And the comedy is quite sharp and quick witted. However, the plot is a little convoluted and a tad predictable. Yet despite having a few problems, Mr. Right is an entertaining and wickedly funny action-comedy.

It's the latest trend in movies: "I useta be a highly trained government assassin, but now I kill people purely for my own reasons ..." with the spin in this one being a romance thrown in for spice. This is nada but a personality vehicle for the stars and they do their Jim Carrey best to ladle just that all over the thing. Imagine a guy getting buckshot in the face being played for laffs and you have the tone in a nutshell. Cue the truckloads of bad guys dropping like flies.
