Edward Norton is the only breath of fresh air in a genre exercise suffocated by film noir conventions. [Full review in Spanish]

Jane Jacobs, Jonathan Lethem, and Edward Norton walk into a theater to see Chinatown. Motherless Brooklyn walked out.

The neo-noir that Ed Norton gambled on didn't hit the mark but it's admirable that someone put out an old-style movie in a world of franchise hits and Oscar-bait entries.

It's clear that this tale of civic corruption wanted to be the East's Chinatown. With its jazzy score, city conspiracies and the uncertainty of the femme fetale's father, the only thing that's missing is the actual grit.

Motherless Brooklyn is like a new novel inspired by an old novel that, honestly, wasn't that inspiring in the first place.

I'll stop short at calling it embarrassing, but the line hovers mere inches away.

A collection of characters that feel misplaced in a movie whose genre is a mystery. [Full review in Spanish].

With so much that works as pieces, it's perplexing that the whole of Motherless Brooklyn ends up feeling lifeless, rather than as a living, breathing film.

Edward Norton's performance is memorable, but the two-and-a-half-hour long film is not.

There is a good movie in Motherless Brooklyn buried under tons of plot. The moral of the story is that even labours of love need supervision to keep self-indulgence in check.

There's an admirable quality to the earnestness with which Edward Norton has tackled "Motherless Brooklyn." A bold move on his part, but ultimately a meandering folly.

A beautifully made meandering mess of a film.

All of these changes come off as deeply cynical and seemingly designed to manipulate, feign significance and deflect criticism from his glossy, Lifetime noir which is so aesthetically garish it frequently borders on parody.

Motherless Brooklyn is a well-performed, yet undercooked, noir that is too mediocre to justify its confused and safe ambitions.

Motherless Brooklyn [is] a noble failure, but a failure nonetheless.

To anyone yearning to revisit the old noir days of fedoras and dames, Motherless Brooklyn will be a fun little throwback. However, the accumulation of missteps in its execution are far too many for me.

There is a lot of cramming of a message with a very thin plot.

At a painfully overlong 144 minutes, Motherless Brooklyn will leave you hailing for the nearest NY taxi cab to come and take you far, far away.

Edward Norton mines political relevance in some areas of noir-drenched New York and completely ignores it in others. As a result, Motherless Brooklyn becomes Chinatown's outshined, ugly stepbrother.

Unfortunately, Norton's noir opus is a mixed bag of big ideas and generic themes, stifled by an even more generic presentation.
