The Mist (2007)

Critic Consensus: Frank Darabont's impressive camerawork and politically incisive script make The Mist a truly frightening experience.

Movie Info

David Drayton and his young son Billy are among a large group of terrified townspeople trapped in a local grocery store by a strange, otherworldly mist. David is the first to realize that there are things lurking in the mist--deadly, horrifying things--creatures not of this world. Survival depends on everybody in the store pulling together, but is that possible, given human nature? As reason crumbles in the face of fear and panic, David begins to wonder what terrifies him more: the monsters in the mist or the ones inside the store, the human kind, the people that until now had been his friends and neighbors?

[This] grocery-store survival drama, dominated by Marcia Gay Harden as a shrill fundamentalist, serves as a crude but effective allegory for post-9/11 America.

It's a horror movie of real conviction. It deserves to be a hit.

A near-campy escapist thrill ride.

The Mist builds toward a climax so wrenching that I hesitate to recommend the film, but I think Darabont earns his vision.

November 26, 2007

Even though it is mindless, at least until the provocative ending, The Mist manages to provide some decent old-school shocks.

The Shawshank Redemption, was splendid; the second, The Green Mile, wasn't; and now The Mist continues the slide. I wouldn't say this is laugh-out-loud risible, but there are definitely moments.

Audience Reviews for The Mist

Personally I thought this was excellent! Heard little about it before seeing it, but once I heard it is based on a Stephen King story I had to check it out. It certainly is typical Stephen King stuff, weird and wonderful. A mix of Cloverfield and the Fog. If you haven't seen it go check it out!

Some performances were less memorable than others and its plot could be deemed outlandish at times, but the film makes good in instilling a fearful and direct vibe. The Mist's alarming tone, dreadful and tragic sequences is more than enough to wipe away the blemishes. 4/5

The best way I can sum-up this film is: it's intense. There's nothing particularly extraordinary about the acting or dialogue but the interesting characters (particularly the religious fanatic played by Marcia Gay Harden), the mysterious unnatural mist, and shocker ending are more than enough to recommend this one.
