Movie Info

This epic silent film from 1926 was restored from the original negatives and released again in 1988. Ivan Mosjoukine plays hero Michel Strogoff, a currier for the Czar sent to warn about an impending Tartar invasion. Our hero is blinded with a red-hot sword but miraculously recovers his sight to save the day. Nearly three hours long, the restored feature was accompanied by a full orchestra at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris on April 29th, 1988.

This spectacular film from France, with its surging mobs and bloodthirsty incidents, leaves one with a rather mixed impression. It is not a good film, but it is a little enjoyable.
