Movie Info

In this irreverent comedy, awkward teenager Tobe (Dustin Ingram) sets off on a road trip to meet Monica Velour (Kim Cattrall), his favorite '80s porn star, at a rare live appearance hundreds of miles away. Instead of the glamorous sexpot portrayed on film, he finds a 49-year-old single mom living in a trailer in rural Indiana, performing at seedy strip clubs to make ends meet. A starry-eyed Tobe, still captivated by his crush, befriends Monica, further complicating her difficult life. Kim Cattrall gives a career-defining performance in this offbeat love story that appeals to the dreamer -- and the nerd -- in all of us. -- (C) Anchor Bay

Pretty good performance, awfully lame movie.

Had first-time director Keith Bearden been as devoted to keeping Meet Monica Velour on track as he did to coming up with punderful porn flick names, he could have had a satisfying dark comedy on his hands.

The role of a former star of the ''golden age'' of porn sounds perfect for Kim Cattrall, and she handles it nicely - at least, in the rare moments when this indie comedy isn't terminally contrived.

You really come away wishing Cattrall could take this character to a more serious film. Who better to show the flip side of beauty?

April 15, 2011 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

Better than its premise would suggest, the film works to the degree that it does thanks to the well-drawn characterizations and the frequent doses of sly, subtle humor.

Watching Tobe circle the drain in an open-mouthed daze, like some sort of unwanted goldfish, is absolutely no fun at all.

Audience Reviews for Meet Monica Velour

Owing a heavy debt to Napoleon Dynamite, this quirky indie follows closely in that film's smalltown footsteps, right down to the skinny, nerdy, puffhaired oddball male lead. When he learns his favorite porn star is starring at a strip club in Indiana, he road trips in his inherited weinermobile to sell the vintage auto and catch her show. Kim Cattrall is excellent in a standout performance as the former '80s sex idol now in her late 40s on a downward slide, and unafraid to show the inevitable effect time has on beauty. Brian Dennehy is equally good in a supporting role as the boy's crusty father, and Keith David ingratiates as a wizened artist/collector of Americana. A happy-ever-after ending doesn't quite fit with the rest of the offbeat storytelling, but the trip has enough detours worth taking.

The film was good but could have been so much better. Kim Cattrall is amazing and should have gotten an Oscar nomination for the film. The film needed a rewrite. The tone was off. Also it felt like I was watching 2 different films here. His story was more like Napoleon Dynamite and her story was like The Wrestler. I thought Dustin Ingram was ok as Tobe. However, they made a mistake making him look like a clone of Napoleon Dynamite. That was too distracting. I did think Brian Dennehy and Keith David were good in their supporting roles. The film is worth seeing especially for Kim Cattrall's performance in it.

This proved to be somewhat formulaic, and yet, something about the way Kim Cattrall played the titular character evoked a boatload of sympathy. Young Dustin Ingram, as Tobe, reminded this viewer of Michael Cera, but without the annoying mannerisms. The supporting cast held their own and did admirably well, with Brian Dennehy being the most recognizable name. Without the talents of Miss Cattrall, this could have been awful. Her presence lifted an otherwise pedestrian tale and made it very watchable indeed.
