Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love Reviews

This film is different precisely because Broomfield was a long-time friend of Marianne. His heart is invested, which gives the film a welcome intimacy and warmth.

Never do we learn how it felt to be the woman to whom [Leonard] Cohen would say "so long" every night on stage.

Footage of Marianne on her deathbed, listening to a tender message from Cohen, leaves one all of a pleasant ache. The pair were haplessly toxic. Warm and sexy, they were also united by their love of words to the end.

Using personal photos and brief snatches of home-video footage, [Broomfield] has tenderly delved into the Leonard-Marianne relationship and assembled one of his most poetic, beguiling films.

Marianne & Leonard is a tragic chronicle of how life hurries us by, or hurries by us, flinging kismets we only recognise as kismets too late.

With a softened lens, British documentarian Nick Broomfield adoringly examines a fascinating relationship in a fascinating time that saw Cohen transition from a poet to a world-class songwriter.

This is an insider's fascinating meditation on the nature of genius and stardom and the toll they take on the naively optimistic.

Although there are many witnesses who sit down with Broomfield who help drive the story... it is Ihlen's melodic voice who lends a ghostly conscience to the film.

Achieving the kind of balance to which Cohen always aspired, "Marianne & Leonard" is heartbreaking and heartening in Zen-like equal measure.

What makes this film unmissable, however, is the fact that we get Marianne's story more or less in full as well.

Marianne Ihlen doesn't steer this moving, sympathetic, but ultimately frustrating tribute. Perhaps inevitably, Cohen does, via Broomfield's fascination with the singer's tortured relations with the many women he romanced.

(Nick) Broomfield has the personality to make his onscreen presence interesting even if you're not keen on meta-documentary.

Marianne and Leonard turns out to be a rather run-of-the-mill documentary about Cohen's journey, taking us down well-documented paths.

Words of Love fails to heed many of the lessons that he may have learned along the way.

While the title Marianne & Leonard sounds as if it's out to give the female half of a famous partnership equal time, it does something quite close to the opposite.

Love stories are like Tolstoy's unhappy families: no two of them are alike. But even given that, the relationship chronicled in "Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love" has a quality very much its own.

An impossibly heartfelt portrait of this woman, and her impossible relationship with a brilliant man.

It's an entertaining flashback to an always-diverting countercultural epoch, with a touching footnote of a semi-famous love story at its center.

It has a cumulative emotional power, especially if you love Cohen's work as much as I do.

A lovely illustration of the twists and turns of a complicated relationship that produced some of the gifted songwriter's most indelible songs.
