Critic Reviews for Magnus
The loneliness of the long-distance chess grandmaster is affectingly conveyed in "Magnus," an intimate portrait of the game's reigning champ, 25-year-old Magnus Carlsen.
Magnus is a sweet and mostly restrained documentary about the world chess champion and occasional clothing model Magnus Carlsen.
There's scant input from chess experts to explain why he's so good, what's unique about his gamesmanship and the like, and the film has nothing interesting to say about chess in general in the modern age.
Ree convinces us that Magnus is indeed a prodigy but, even so, his rise to the top surely can't have been quite as straightforward as the film suggests.
The movie assumes that a chronicle of Magnus's rise will be enough to keep the audience hooked. That turns out to be the right call.
