Ma Reviews

June 3, 2019
The Oscar-winning actress (Octavia Spencer) is the only reason to see "Ma," and she's clearly having a grand old campy time playing Sue Ann.

During every savage attack, the audience laughed uproariously. Is this what we've come to?

It's creepy and suspenseful and, although the last act goes on auto-pilot, the film offers a better-than-average experience for those who like their psychopaths unhinged.

Taylor and Spencer's detour to horror drifts, ever backward, into the zone of schmaltz.
May 31, 2019
There's nothing but the immediate mechanics of the plot and a straightforward stoking of revulsion, fear, and gratification.
May 31, 2019
Spencer is hugely watchable, as ever, but I'd love to have seen her get her teeth into an even meatier Ma.

The thrills come extra cheap and late in Tate Taylor's Ma, a horror movie torn between campiness and compassion.

The true horror of the film should be in its racial landscape, but Taylor doesn't paint a clear enough picture.

Ma is not an especially well-made movie: It suffers from poor pacing, overly broad comedy, some truly ugly camerawork, and an empty script.
May 30, 2019
Unfortunately, more often than not, Ma settles into its lack of a refined generic vision and stalls out just before it's able to hit most of its horror talking points squarely on the head.

"Ma" zips along while providing a foundation for Landes' increasingly bonkers script (and most importantly, Spencer's creepy-larious performance).

The lady might be a wackjob, but she's one with some complexity behind the creeping instability. As showy character roles go, Spencer hits the motherlode.

"Ma" can, in the right frame of mind, be great fun.

These are interesting ideas in search of an interesting movie.
May 30, 2019
a suspenseful and darkly funny mix of the private disco inferno from The Loved Ones, intergenerational vendetta, bunny-boilerplate thrills and torture porn tropes, all involving an unhinged mama and her perverse desire to pass down her own teen trauma.
May 29, 2019
It's an unusually potent atmosphere for a quickie Blumhouse horror project; you can't say this one is elevated by the presence of Octavia Spencer -- it's more that she allows herself to descend to the crazy-eyed pleasures of being monstrous.

Ma isn't a bad movie, and it's sure as hell not trying to be a good one, but it scratches a particular itch that neither noble failures nor cranked-out hackwork can touch.
May 29, 2019
In her first horror film, Octavia Spencer is a twisted treat, but this predictable Blumhouse scarefest rarely lives up to the irresistible dynamo at its center..

The relative success of "Ma" is largely thanks to an intense performance from Spencer...

The movie ties itself up in knots as it tries to be provocative without giving offense, and offering more complacency and comfort than terror.

Audiences will walk out with that good chiropractor feeling, the one that says, "Yes, I have been manipulated. I have been nothing but manipulated and pounded on for the last 90 minutes. And it was a very satisfying thing."

All told, "Ma" adds up to a decent B-picture, though perhaps not the star-launching turn Spencer and Taylor intended.

Spencer's bonkers turn makes the movie, smoothing over plot holes, questionable decision making and a clunky if well-intentioned anti-bullying message.

May 29, 2019
Attempts to be a psychological campy thriller but gets so lost in trying to construct a message that all the exaggerated thrills die before even lifting off.
May 29, 2019
Too nervous to thrill, too daft to upset anyone, and constantly policing how much fun it lets Spencer have.

When the movie turns into full-blown horror, which it eventually sort of does, the pacing of the violence is all out of whack.

"Ma" is one loony little horror film, and Octavia Spencer has a grand old time being the craziest thing in it.

Even as the story descends into full bloody camp at its crescendo, Spencer holds the more ludicrous plot threads together.

It's a squalid formula picture that's too busy connecting dots, hitting beats, engineering situations designed to make you squirm. But you will squirm.
May 29, 2019
There's a great deal of fun to be had hanging out with Ma, a nasty yet surprisingly empathetic slab of exploitation with more than just carnage on its mind.

Par for the expected course, though better made than most summer screamers.

Unsatisfying as a psycho-killer vehicle for Octavia Spencer, it may pull some genre fans in for opening week but is unlikely to leave them buzzing.
