For those looking for a nasty bit of grand guignol poison fluff, you could certainly do worse. If only it hadn't arrived in a year when you could also do better.

Note to self... never piss off Octavia Spencer because she can be one crazy mother.

Spencer is a terrific villain, but she's stuck in a clunky story

Octavia Spencer barely salvages this tonally uneven thriller that feels both too absurd and too restrained at the same time.

If you're set on seeing Ma, go for Spencer's menacing performance and what I hope is her gateway in more starring roles in more genre films.

It's hard to root for the psychotic Ma but it's even harder to root for the teens she terrorises. So, you might find yourself rooting against them all - cast, director and production team.

[Octavia] Spencer's effort is undermined by Ma's wildly inconsistent tone, one-dimensional character writing, and a terribly paced finale of cringeworthy body horror, a sequence which feels like an entirely different film in itself.

Unfortunately, it's hard as an adult viewer to always feel empathy for terrorized high school students. And the anti-bullying message tends to get lost-like the rest of the film-in the silliness that ensues.

Ma wants to be something bigger, but keeps falling back on well-worn genre tropes.

The groundwork is there... And yet, Ma never really gets to be about Ma-or Sue Ann, the actual name of Spencer's character.

Octavia Spencer expands her range yet again, but Tate Taylor's suspense/horror pastiche is as messed up as its titular character.

Ma is an excellent showcase of Octavia Spencer's talent, but the crazy train can only take you so far.

Without Spencer's stabilising efforts, Ma would have been a total write-off. Instead, it's just OK.

Does not give Octavia Spencer the necessary time to make her character resonate. [Full review in Spanish]

A great concept that needed more form and follow-through.

How on earth did this by-the-numbers outsider/don't trust the lonely older lady horror flick draw this cast?!

Inept to the definition of thrills due to a convoluted script riddled with unbelievably inconsistent flaws and dialogue, Ma isn't just "meh," it's aMAzingly bad.

May 31, 2019
There are too few nervous giggles for Ma to be campy, and too few jump scares for Ma to be frightening.
May 31, 2019
Where it falls short is that it's almost two stories in one and it should have stuck to one plot line. The film could have been a good revenge thriller, had that been the main focus.
May 30, 2019
Unfortunately, more often than not, Ma settles into its lack of a refined generic vision and stalls out just before it's able to hit most of its horror talking points squarely on the head.
