A 'friday night movie' that stays in the safe zone. Spencer shines as usual. [Full review in Spanish].

The movie itself is fairly ordinary... [But] when [Octavia Spencer] goes bananas, she pulls the rip-cord. She has all kinds of fun.

[T]he film never really finds its footing.

Even though Ma could've been more from a social commentary perspective, I still enjoyed it both as a hoot of a pulpy thriller and as a fascinating racial case study that's ultimately as much about its interpretation as its intent.

"Ma" is poorly written, but Spencer lifts it up by making her crazy lady character at least a little understandable.

Ma is a hilarious, yet creepy take on the 'cool neighborhood mom' a bizarre and outrageous romp through the sinister world of 'Sue Ann' played by Oscar nominee Octavia Spencer

It's daft, it doesn't really make sense and the talent here could have, should have created something much, much better.

Ma is an excellent showcase of Octavia Spencer's talent, but the crazy train can only take you so far.

This movie proves that interesting casting choices putting a new spin on old ideas do not guarantee that a horror movie will be either scary or even entertaining.

For those looking for a nasty bit of grand guignol poison fluff, you could certainly do worse. If only it hadn't arrived in a year when you could also do better.

Ma isn't a bad film. It just isn't very convincing.

...what audiences are going to leave salivating for is a series of exponentially [awful] sequels that cut out the emotional undercurrents and focus on what really matters: Octavia Spencer excitedly slaughtering annoying kids...

MA isn't fine art...For those looking for a good time at the movies with plenty of laugh lines, bits of violent shock, and a stirring performance, then MA will fit the bill nicely.
July 12, 2019
The film toys with very real traumas and avoids every event to engage with them. In the end, what fun there is to be had is shallow.

It's hard to root for the psychotic Ma but it's even harder to root for the teens she terrorises. So, you might find yourself rooting against them all - cast, director and production team.

Octavia Spencer once again proves she's more versatile than most give her credit for in this unnerving and fiendish psychological horror.

Note to self... never piss off Octavia Spencer because she can be one crazy mother.

Ma is a few more drafts from perfection, but the actor playing her is the real deal.
June 26, 2019
The fundamental storytelling problem is that Sue Ann is too relatable, her suffering too outrageous, and her anger too justified, for her to become Jason Voorhees

Without Spencer's stabilising efforts, Ma would have been a total write-off. Instead, it's just OK.
