The more Long Shot invokes the real world, the less funny it becomes.
May 3, 2019
Long Shot unsuccessfully balances highlighting important social issues and making fun of them at the same time with two leads that are miscast.

Long shots lose a lot more often than they pay out, and Levine's film is no exception.

Does Seth Rogan ever read over what he writes? This feels like a quick first draft of a comedy film that needed a second read to make the story work, add some layers and stronger jokes. All the voices sound the same, and all like a tired Rogan.

In short, this film is not really a romantic comedy. It is a poor attempt at political satire in the wake of Trump's election that also includes a romance.

Casually enjoyable in the moment yet just as forgettable, Long Shot is a perfect date night on the couch, getting drunk off a bottle of cheap wine movie.

It felt like two, maybe three different movies stitched together? The idea is that they'll blend at some point, but they don't.

These two characters are completely unbelievable.

This film is more interested in pleasing its audience with rom-com cliches than investigating any of its characters' lofty ambitions. And that's where it falls apart as a work that's trying to do, well, anything with its premise.

Despite all of its welcome and well-earned charm, Long Shot is ultimately to scattered to make much of an impression.

As it proceeds toward its telegraphed rom-com ending, the film becomes just more empty rhetoric, an ineffectual reiteration.

The slogan for the Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron vehicle Long Shot reads "unlikely but not impossible"...The romantic comedy is predicated on this idea, without ever explaining what about the pairing makes it unlikely.

Long Shot does not bring back the romcom so much as it reminds viewers why that genre resembles a corpse today.

What pushes Long Shot from unexpected to downright unbelievable, however, is the context in which this coupling takes place.

While flirting with some disturbing political truths, the film sometimes mistakes fatuity for freshness. If anything, it works as a showcase for the actors.

As a kinda raunchy, kinda endearing popcorn flick, there's stuff to enjoy about "Long Shot." By dressing up like a movie trying to make a point, though, it just ends looking like an empty suit at its own podium.

A dull, frustrating slog, about as funny as a pebble in a shoe and as authentically romantic as a dinner date with a blow-up doll.

It may not work as a movie, but as a love story, it's got great appeal.

Rogen and Theron are surprisingly good together, and Long Shot has genuinely funny moments. But the writing and direction are too loose to make this uneven comedy memorable.

Long Shot is too fixated on the supposed absurdity of its romantic pair to spend much time considering them as people.
