Critic Consensus: Lizzie forces audiences to take a new look at a widely known true-crime story -- even if the well-acted end result is never quite as gripping as it could be.

Academy Award (R) nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry, "Big Love") stars as Lizzie Borden, the notorious woman at the heart of one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. After a lifetime of loneliness, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit in housemaid Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart) and their secret intimacy sparks an unthinkable act. Critic Reviews for Lizzie

[Craig William] Macneill's approach might be described as a so-so impression of art-house understatement, with lots of wide-screen compositions that make obvious use of negative space and a flat tone that might be mistaken for dramatic restraint.

Sevigny is compelling, Stewart less so, and there are few surprises. A bit TV. But not in the good way.

Performances are the saving grace of a film which, while certainly not lacking in dramatic heft, seems more preoccupied with sexing up the scandal than getting to grips with those at the centre of it.

The element of horror is treated circumspectly, almost dispassionately, as if to douse its mythic element in as much cold reality as possible.

For all the horror of her situation, Lizzie needed some larger motivation to wield her axe. Lizzie dramatically provides it.

Unfortunately, despite a couple of solid performances, the film doesn't break any new ground or offer any particular illumination on these grisly crimes.

Audience Reviews for Lizzie

Incredibly boring, Lizzie is a bizarre and monotonous "true life" crime drama. The story follows Lizzie Borden, an oppressed and victimized young woman who forms a friendship with the new housemaid and conspires with her to murder her parents. Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart lead the cast and they give fairly decent performances. However, the plot is absurd; proposing that Mr. Borden was raping the maid and that Lizzie was secretly a lesbian. But worse yet is the slow, languished pacing and dullness of the directing style. Lizzie is a lackluster biopic that's more fiction than fact.

½

The story behind the nursery rhyme in all of its naked violence. Slow in parts but is salvaged in the long run with very fine performances most notably Kristen Stewart who is a most improved actress. (9-29-18)
