Little Sister (2016)

Critic Consensus: Little Sister subverts indie drama expectations with a refreshingly off-kilter look at family dynamics that makes its points through solid characterizations and earnest effort.

Movie Info

October, 2008. Young nun Colleen is avoiding all contact from her family, until an email from her mother announces, "Your brother is home." On returning to her childhood home in Asheville, NC, she finds her old room exactly how she left it: painted black and covered in goth/metal posters. Her parents are happy enough to see her, but unease and awkwardness abounds. Her brother is living as a recluse in the guesthouse since returning home from the Iraq war. During Colleen's visit, tensions rise and fall with a little help from Halloween, pot cupcakes, and GWAR. Little Sister is a sad comedy about family - a schmaltz-free, pathos-drenched, feel good movie for the little goth girl inside us all.

[A] fine, darkly poignant tale of a conflicted young nun-in-training facing her own version of "hope and change."

Zach Clark goes down dark-comic alleys, but he's made a transfixing film about a dysfunctional family that looks touchingly and unnervingly like yours and mine.

A quiet and gentle film, emotional but not manipulatively sentimental, sad but not nihilistic, Marilyn Manson epigram and Goth-font chapter markers notwithstanding.

Flirting with sitcommy high jinks, Clark instead gives us a bittersweet cocktail of soul-weary defeat and unassuming vigor.

A strange, spiky movie that refuses to beg for our affection, "Little Sister," the fifth feature from Zach Clark, molds the classic homecoming drama into a quirky reconciliation between faith and family.

October 13, 2016 | Full Review…

Short, sweet, and nowhere near as prickly as it seems on the surface, Little Sister plays best when it's not trying to coat its appealing brand of distorted realism with a punk rock sheen.
