Juliet Stevenson gives a typically excellent performance of bottled up shame and guilt as a woman haunted by the sins of her mother in this low-budget British drama.

While the tone feels uneven, Let Me Go is handsomely shot and filled with brave subject matter - and, thanks to strong performances by Stevenson and Bertling, it leaves you with plenty to ponder.

Flaws, contrivances and occasional mis-steps aside, Let Me Go, in its best moments, is a very, very good film indeed.

The intensity of the subjects they address offsets the histrionic tendencies in the film's execution. There's no such defence, though, for the soapy subplots.
