While unevenly paced and unevenly out-there, Knife + Heart is a ready-made introduction to a fringe world of killing and queerness...

The film has a big heart sometimes for the victims, and yet the deaths are so sadistic and so brutal... It didn't have the empathy that I thought it should have.

Knife+Heart is nothing if not stunning in its 70s aesthetic with film grain, sumptuous neon glows, and synth score [even if the climax] feels more convenient than fulfilling.

...thwarted by filmmaker Yann Gonzalez's excessively avant-garde sensibilities and an emphasis on a progressively tedious narrative.

[Knife + Heart] could have fit perfectly in the 70s era of grindhouse films, Euro/Italian gialli and De Palma-esqe psychological thrillers.

Variously gorgeous, ethereal, artful and tacky, both Anne's film and Gonzalez's are sustained by a throbbing sexual energy, aided by French electronic act M83's twinkling, club‑inspired score.

Yann Gonzalez wants the giallo to make a modern comeback, and honestly?

However, once the amateur sleuthing starts, leading to ever more ridiculous clues, the sleazy campness loses all sense of style, pace and meaning. A shame.

Witness the encomia extended by some to Yann Gonzalez's Knife+Heart.

A giallo pastiche starring Vanessa Paradis as a maker of gay porn films who finds her team of actors menaced by a slasher, it's not short of weird incidents, but its spirit of kinky, compassionate melodrama has little energy.

The film exhibits a playfulness as scenes dart between creatively sensationalised scenarios and the real world, aided by impeccable lighting and electronic score.

a luridly coloured, transgressively queered piece of self-conscious schlock where cutting is the business of lovesick killers as much as filmmakers - and both cut right to the heart.
July 1, 2019
A campy, colourful slasher set in the gay porn industry of late 1970s Paris, Knife+Heart is almost as fun to describe as it is to watch.

It's an oddly compelling thriller that may just presage bigger and better things from its maker.

Knife+Heart is an effective hybrid of both the slasher genre and the erotic fantasy trope, all wrapped up in a refreshingly queer aesthetic.

Like a good giallo, Knife + Heart's mood is often more important than its plot or character development.
June 18, 2019
There is suspense, sex. There are slayings. Yet often, we are instructed to approach with caution, as we are often their casualties. This difference in Knife+Heart is that queer characters are allowed prominent roles in their own tale.

"As a thriller, the film does not work. As a cult-movie in progress, I suspect it works".

It's rare to say striking visuals and hyper violence should take precedence over character development, but that is the case with Knife + Heart which prevails with the former, slacks at the latter and tops it all off sufficiently with saucy humour.

Knife+Heart is essential viewing -- sumptuous, a tad silly, shocking and built on the most unexpectedly solid emotional foundations.
