Jurassic Park III Reviews

June 26, 2019
Jurassic Park III exemplifies Hollywood's standard practice of stomping a brilliant concept beyond recognition.
June 26, 2019
At its best, it whips itself up into a nice, scary lather, but it shrivels to nothing between the set pieces, in an excess of fog, token bits of talk, and an absence of genuine, elemental awe.
June 26, 2019
Imagine my surprise, then, to find that Jurassic Park III not only beats the first JP and its sequel The Lost World into a cocked pith helmet, but also manages to be a perfectly enjoyable monster movie in its own right.

The latest sequel to Steven Spielberg's clever, scary 1993 original is even less necessary than Spielberg's borderline nonsensical (but still pretty entertaining) 1997 follow-up, The Lost World.

[This] sequel isn't terribly frightening or gory, and at times it's even atmospheric. It also has a sense of humor: Tea Leoni's moony reaction shots intentionally send up the glossy idealism of the original.
November 5, 2008
An all-action, helter-skelter, don't-forget-to-buy-the-computer-game ride that makes the two previous installments look like models of classic filmmaking.
February 9, 2006
True, the film offers little new, but it's still stirring family entertainment.
March 19, 2002
If there's one thing certain in this new instalment of Jurassic Park, it's that the critters are a whole lot smarter, faster and interesting than the Homo sapiens dropping in on them.

What we get isn't so much contempt for the audience - we've already proved that in the summer we'll watch anything -- as the chronic-fatigue syndrome of sequels, even Sequelbergs.

Sure, the dinosaurs look awesome -- but only in passing. For much of the time, they are shown in close-up shots, a sure sign of cost-cutting. And they come and go, like video game creations.
August 10, 2001
This great dinosaur of a movie is shambling towards well-merited extinction.
August 9, 2001
Too bad the script doesn't extend the same courtesy to the actors, who are saddled with dialogue neither man nor beast could respond to.

The third time around is at least one time too many.

July 26, 2001
Not as awe-inspiring as the first film or as elaborate as the second, but in its own B-movie way, it's a nice little thrill machine.
July 24, 2001
Drama is minimal and character nonexistent.
July 20, 2001
What makes it worth sitting through is the chance it offers to catch up on the technical advances since the last installment.
July 19, 2001
Dinosaurs rule movie but flimsy screenplay undercuts intense action.

Spielberg's wizardry is gone, and his balletic light touch as well, and that gives too much of this 90-minute movie over to the duller-than-dull characters.

Relatively speaking, Jurassic Park III is a disappointment of behemoth proportions.

July 18, 2001
As always, the technical credits are not only outstanding but the whole reason for the film to exist.
July 18, 2001
Has the integrity of a solid B-movie.

July 18, 2001
One staggeringly silly movie.
July 18, 2001
The dialogue is weak and the science has gone from incredulous to silly.
July 18, 2001
A third time? Think Thanksgiving leftovers -- in December.
July 18, 2001
A movie in which little else happens except people get chased, terrified and generally bullied by prehistoric creatures.
July 18, 2001
Plays out the way you'd expect, perfunctorily, obligingly, without much enthusiasm and with very little terror.
July 18, 2001
A lot of stagnant storytelling trapped underneath prehistoric footprints.

All it wants to do is scare a smile onto your face, and it often succeeds.
July 18, 2001
The story's tired, as are the main characters.

With the exception of some startlingly real and impressive dinosaur effects, its only virtue is brevity, running as it does a mere 92 minutes.

July 18, 2001
As dull as the movie is, at least it's not Pearl Harbor.
July 18, 2001
The latest summer dino-fest pales next to the maligned sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
July 18, 2001
It's disappointing that the competent, toned-down, mildly exciting third installment, Jurassic Park III, is little more than a re-rehash of the first movie and much of the second.
July 18, 2001
The best thing that can be said about JP III is that it's stripped to its essentials; it's all effects and action, with the human element reduced to cliches that will have 5-year-olds rolling their eyes.
July 18, 2001
Captures some of the wonder from the first picture.
July 17, 2001
Has to be the sorriest excuse for a reprise since Highlander -- The Final Dimension.

July 17, 2001
A sturdy, watchable, Saturday-afternoon-serial throwback that teems with cool creatures. But it's too prefab to really deliver on the promise of 'intense sci-fi terror' written into the movie's MPAA rating description.
July 17, 2001
It's a tribute to the action skills of director Joe Johnston (Jumanji is the relevant credit) that this film is as brisk and involving as it is.
July 17, 2001
The lack of empathetic characters seems more a filmmaking deficiency than some grand cinematic plan. The viewer definitely leaves the movie feeling unsatisfied.
July 17, 2001
A popcorn-chomping thrill ride that's perfect as a summertime distraction.
July 17, 2001
Partly campy, mostly straight-ahead horrific and nearly always watchable.

Compared to some of this summer's blockbusters ... this is better than average.
