Critic Reviews for Judy & Punch
Either painfully on message, or just painful, this dim-witted revisionist take on the Punch and Judy show feels like a film studies thesis that nobody could be bothered to finish.
Foulkes is bold and playful in her choices, even throwing in a smouldering ditty from Leonard Cohen. Basically, she's a natural when it comes to unpacking a punch.
What a killer debut this is; that's the way to do it.
Judy & Punch is one of the more valiant recent entries in cinema's "worth a shot" file: a promising idea that can't sustain itself for anything approaching feature length.
Balancing slapstick and the anything-but-funny, the film is not without wobbles. As with any high wire act, those are half the point.
Any taint of earnestness would have killed this film, as Foulkes is clearly aware. As a result, she's cannily approached it in the spirit with which it was meant. She's successfully matched its urge to amuse and outrage with her own.
