Critic Reviews for In the Good Old Summertime
Van Johnson and Judy Garland make it a delight. Her numbers are among the best she has ever done.
In the Good Old Summertime is a wonderfully rich entertainment.
Robert Z. Leonard's tepid musical remake of Ernst Lubitsch's masterful The Shop Around the Corner...somehow it just ain't the same.
Judy is delightful of course but the rest of the casting feels off and there aren't enough musical numbers to carry it
Judy sings beautifully. She's one of Hollywood's more progressive people -- and her intelligence shows on the screen.
Audience Reviews for In the Good Old Summertime
Not all that interesting except for Keaton's role in the movie, which is really funny, the rest of it is just another romantic comedy musical.
Out of all the versions of Shop Around the Corner, this one is definitely my favorite. The girl character is quite a shrewish bitch, and only Judy Garland's ineffable charm is able to temper the harsh dialogue. The chemistry is decent and the story is terrible, but Judy's voice make it all worth it. If there was anytime a star was necessary, it's here.
okay, would have been better with a different leading man, that's Liza Minnelli at the end
