As in Portrait of a Lady, Campion demonstrates great faith in the fantasy sequence as a guide to the psyche, but this time the device seems simplistic .

Lacking the courage of its convictions, In The Cut sees Campion deliver a travesty of Moore's novel and a pointless erotic thriller that errs on the side of caution every time.

In the Cut -- if what we have on screen is the best part of the film that made the cut, one can only imagine the dearth of unsavoriness that landed on the cutting room floor - the place this entire film should be.

It's about a lighthouse without any light except the revleation of a truth - and at that point, who cares?

All of this is well done, and yet the movie is kind of a shambles. The key supporting characters are awkwardly used, as if the movie thinks it ought to have them but doesn't know why.

Obsession is central to this erotic thriller. But there's also an obsessive quality to the filmmaker's take on her material, which was adapted from a novel by Susanna Moore, as if the genre excluded all that is spontaneous, frivolous or light.

Meg Ryan took her shirt off for this?

Showy adaptation of Susanna Moore's sexual thriller starring Meg Ryan is more erratic than erotic.

In The Cut falls short on execution, with Campion's unique and powerful vision undermined by the conventions of a traditional genre.

The movie builds slowly, slowly, slowly, towards a truly stupid climax

If there ever was an era when America wanted to see Meg Ryan naked -- and this is doubtful -- it surely ended 10 years ago.
