In Hotel Mumbai, death is ever-present, and it is so calculatingly exacted by its terrorists - and its filmmaker - that its depiction comes close to sadism: grueling, yes, but never truly shocking.

The taut editing and the kinetic cinematography which is intercut with real-life footage guarantee that the film replicates the tensions of the attacks. But without any singular direction, it articulates nothing more.

When we're watching these [type of] events unfold in news broadcasts on such a regular basis, I'm not sure I can take reliving them all over again at the movies.

Hotel Mumbai feels 5 years too late and maybe even 5 years too soon, with a subject matter that's been covered before with greater dexterity.

Hotel Mumbai serves as nothing but an unfortunate exploitation on the horrible events.

There's nothing especially transcendent in Maras' storytelling -- some epiphany that would make wading through all the bloodshed more meaningful.

We can't in all good conscience treat cinematic representations of historical traumas as mere generic exercises in form.

The film is based on true events, seemingly fictionalized to exploit trauma, Hotel Mumbai doesn't offer much of anything besides violence.

Hotel Mumbai has a sense of urgency that is as potent as it is unnecessary. [Full Review in Spanish]

Hotel Mumbai tries so hard to separate Indian from Lashkar-e-Taiba that it forgets to separate out Islam too [as things] quickly devolve from docudrama to survival thriller.

This does what it says on the tin and does it bloody well. It's just a shame that to appreciate the solid filmmaking you have to leave your ethics at the door.

Hotel Bombay, in the end, does not talk about terrorism, nor about survival, but about the selfless professionalism of the members of a tourist complex built on the dogma that the client is God and Muhammad is not his prophet. [Full Review in Spanish]

The film tells a very superficial story that winds up not resonating as much as it could. [Full Review in Spanish]

There is something queasy about mining such fresh real-life trauma for popcorn entertainment.

Instead of eliciting a moving or joyous response it feels somewhat off-putting. And that certainly could not be what Maras or Collee had in mind.

What do we do with all this filmmaking dexterity when it serves an effort that feels exploitative and too soon?

There were innumerable ways to tell the story of the Mumbai attacks responsibly, and with greater emotional punch... Instead, the filmmakers leaned into the body count. It's technically competent filmmaking - just not ethically.

Too often Hotel Mumbai feels manipulative. The suspense is often dragged out or telegraphed, which makes this story of bravery in the face of danger lack the dramatic impact it desires.

The result is tasteless in the extreme, The Poseidon Adventure with jihadists, rearranging the randomness of real-life atrocity to suit the needs of a thriller, where the dabs of characterisation feel woefully beside the point.

Simplistic threads of heroism and humanization are invariably presented on a silver platter, because in a situation this awful there has to be something positive to embrace, even if it doesn't ring true.
