Critic Reviews for Hot Tub Time Machine 2
The film's belated sequel has the same director, three-quarters of its lead cast and one-third of its writing team, but in the intervening five years, all seem to have forgotten why the original worked and what it meant.
This is the kind of movie that will make you want to go back in time -- to the moment before you made the rash decision to start watching it.
This is asphyxiate-on-your-own popcorn unfunny, exhaustingly stupid and a waste of twelve quid.
The relentless spitballing yields sporadic snorts, but with women reduced to walk-on titparts between stale knob gags, it absolutely feels like the bromance's final, desperate throbs ...
It's a dull, lazy, scattershot would-be comedy about a group of mostly unlikable characters who have all the depth of the Three Stooges in the Curly Joe era.
Audience Reviews for Hot Tub Time Machine 2
You know how you watch some sequels, and its bad, and you think "they didn't even try on this one, damn!!" Well I think they tried on this one ... and it's still bad. Okay, maybe not THAT bad, but bad enough. Unless you fancy lots of dick jokes. Fancy that?
This was even funnier than the first one. The cast is back and they are having a blast in every scene they are in. A total blast of laughs. The boys are back brining the comedy and heart.
Normally when I watch a sequel to a comedy I really enjoyed, I go in with an open mind, kowing that it has no chance of surpassing the original. "Hot Tub Time Machine 2" not only did not surpass it's predecessor, but it get's shit on entirely by it. Having a story that just exists to send the characters through time once again, there really is nothing interesting going on during the duration of this film. I felt empty handed by the conclusion and that was a huge disappointment, because there is so much that can be done with a time travel story. Getting jumbled in a complex plot, I really did not care about anything the characters had to go through. The voice of reason in the first film was John Cusack's character, and without his return, everyone felt like an innane person. Relying on profanity and dick jokes to chug the movie along, it felt like it just would not end. "Hot Tub Time Machine 2" is lazily written, from it's 4th wall sequel jokes to it's on the nose dialogue, and the direction is all over the place. This film exists from the success of the first and they clearly could care less if it was good. I chuckled once or twice, but every single joke felt recycled from other films of the like. This film is terrible all around. Even if you are a fan of the first, I do not even recommend one viewing out of curiosty, because it is just unnecessary.
