Caan and Hollander's chemistry cannot redeem this flawed foray into family love and trigger testing.

Holy Lands is an interesting film about a family with a lot of disfunction. There were parts that were funny, but overall it wasn't what I hoped it would be.

A sprawling familial saga that works best when it remains squarely focused on James Caan and his character.

There is humor in the banter between Harry and Moshe, and between Harry and just about everyone else. His caustic wit is always ready.

The movie is all over the place, with tones that shift from melodrama to black comedy. But the performances from a veteran cast led by James Caan make it worthwhile.

Eccentricities and melodramatic contrivances overwhelm any emotional depth in this disjointed drama.

Tosses aside the funny idea, loses track of the stars with chemistry and chases peripheral characters in offensive directions.

An unlikely double act of James Caan and Tom Hollander is the main reason to see this stodgy drama.

Sthers mistakenly thinks the more unconventional she makes the characters, the more we'll like them. What actually happens instead is just the opposite.

There's so little to these characters beyond a few superficial traits that when serious things happen-and boy, do they happen-it is impossible to be moved the way Sthers intends for us to be.

This is no vehicle for humor, but its melodrama does have a good heart, even if former New York cardiologist Harry ironically might not have one of his own at this point in his solitary life.

Holy Lands isn't a bad movie. It's four mediocre movies mixed together.

Holy Lands seeks to explore the dysfunction within one family but this story ultimately falls short in being a compelling film.

When Holy Lands succeeds, it's a moving, humorous film; when it fails, it's difficult to follow or to invest in. The result is a curious, imbalanced narrative that would have been better for one or two fewer plot strands.

A winning seriocomic pairing of James Caan and Tom Hollander lifts Amanda Sthers' ambitious narrative. Read the DFF review of "Holy Lands."

The whole thing idles too long in neutral, which is a shame since Caan and the ever-likeable Hollander play off one another effectively.

There's a sliver of a plot about Harry raising pigs and his family feeling sad, but all is lost within a cacophony of bum notes and fake emotion. Howlingly bad.

[A] stodgy, ungainly and strangely reactionary family drama...

Adapted from her own 2010 critically acclaimed French novel of the same name, Amanda Sthers' (Madame) Holy Lands is an engaging, if not wholly entertaining, drama.
