Critic Reviews for Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Goodbye Mr Chips, the story of a gentle man among gentlemen, was quietly charming and a tour de force for Martin Clunes, proving, as usual, that a tragedian can't play comedy but a comedian can play anything.
... Victoria Hamilton is delightful as the radical feminist Mr. Chips meets in the very wet woods and weds, to the astonishment and envy of his colleagues.
Not a remake of the 1939 classic but a new adaptation of Hilton's sentimental novella... couldn't be more different from the 1939 film, and that's all to the good.
Audience Reviews for Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Masterpiece Theatre does it again. This is a beautifully rendered version of the beloved story. The acting, and photography, are top notch. The dialogue is very well written, and engaging. I think this is just as good as all the other versions I have seen. Clune's performance is not only outstanding, but very touching and heartfelt. There are scenes that brought me to tears. His expressive features underscore his solid acting. A very nice retelling.
