A very simple story that makes one question our beliefs taught in school by teachers vs the harsh reality where those who gets rewarded in the end are those who fake it till they make it. It leaves a bad aftertaste and open ended question on who won in the end. Did Hundert fail as a teacher focusing all his efforts on changing the character of Bell to be better rather than focusing on the other boys? Was he the cause of Bell's risen ambition? or was Bell the one who taught Hundert a lesson that will haunt him with the remaining years of his wasted life when he told him how his morals has taken him nowhere (a sad old teacher), while he (bill) is now rising in a society to be its leader

I enjoyed this movie

An utter failed attempt to be Dead Poets Society or Good Will Hunting. Kevin Kline's character is an unlikeable creep who gives off pedo priest vibes and prides himself on grooming boys into his obsession with Greek rulers and philosophers while dismissing rulers of color for not leaving an impact on history (Like maybe we just have better record of Greek history because no one cared enough about people of color. Did they think of that? I mean, tad racist.). He flirts with a married woman in an early scene only for her character to disappear the majority of the film then return at the end to marry him in the most unromantic, uninteresting side story ever. Like, completely unnecessary. I think they only added it to make him seem like less of a lonely old pedo. Sedgwick Bell, the young antagonist that you think is going to have a change of character and a heartwarming ending turns out to be a complete sociopath who stays a crappy human til the end. THIS MOVIE HAD ZERO POINT. IT WAS SO STUPID AND SUCH A WASTE OF TIME. It's so disappointing to see Jesse Eisenberg and Paul Dano in this film but glad they've gone on to much better roles. Literally all the side characters had the most boring stories. Nothing became of anything in this plot. Basically beware of sociopaths and don't be like Kevin Kline and fake your student's grade to make him do worse than the senator's son you have a hard-on for and make that kid feel like a failure for over 25 years. Things not to do as a teacher, you know.

Superb. A terrific storyline well acted. Yes, it's a bout the 1%, but one hopes they are actually getting this quality of teaching!

7-2018 Good story about doing the right things in life.

A significantly better movie than the repugnant Dead Poet's Society, this tale of the importance of virtue and the realities of human failing is an excellent movie.

12/31/2016: A pretty decent movie. A nice story with a good cast. Similar to, but not as good as The Dead Poets Society.

For those "acclaimed" critics and the average Joes who feel this movie was dull and clich, I have news for you: academia is both, at times.

However, this film surprised me. It was not predictable in the least--characters took chances and did not follow the predicted recipe that most Hollywood offerings of this topic do. It was refreshing to see life reflected in the storyline. If you are a teacher, you will especially enjoy the portrayal of Hundert, as there will always be a Sedgewick Bell in your classroom at some point in your career.

The lesson is a good one, albeit late-coming for the otherwise seasoned character. There was no transformation here, just an affirmation that people most likely will aspire to their true nature and not everyone wants to "be saved." Anyone who was not moved by that point has a fantasy-perspective of education, and probably should learn more about the profession. For all his virtue, Hundert was also flawed, a point of which he is reminded at the very end. His integrity relatively still intact, he continues to practice what he preaches.

The story was perfectly executed, and the filmmakers should be commended for bringing a quality fictional story on academia to the public instead of the derived drivel Hollywood usually spits out at us.

Good performance from Kline but little else.

Good acting, good message, but forgettable.

It has moments of brilliant inspiration showing how teachers can greatly impact our lives. It falls short in plot and purpose.

I went in hoping for another Dead Poet's Society and didn't get it. Expectations can be almost everything I guess. While there are definitely some inspirational moments, I did question others. The "walk on the path" part had me thinking and I'm still not sure if I agree with Hundert or not. I definitely don't completely agree.

A low-key variation of Goodbye Mr. Chips, but not as good.

I could have done without the first half hour of scrappy cliches and this teacher inflating his own ego, but once we got about an hour in the movie got a bit better, all in all not top bad but not one to rewatch

I really liked this movie. Definitely among my list of coming of age movies for my kids when I have kids.

Poor Brutus: No chance to revolt against the authorities, better resort to hypocrisy! From my personal background I should have liked it, but this teacher's method is all sit down and memorize and so is the movie: a dull affair! If this is the way to teach ancient history, the senator is right: What's the use?
