This one might leave you a bit more energized and hopeful than the Kubrick film. Kubrick had no problem showing us what happens when the Shine goes out. Flanagan seeks to do the opposite: Maybe, the film argues, we'll all Shine on.
It would be near sacrilege, of course, to argue that Doctor Sleep is BETTER than The Shining but it is more developed from a story standpoint and will make for more pleasant re-viewings than its predecessor.
The reason it is isn't a perfect film is because of the length. Doctor Sleep is way too long for the story it's telling, but I had fun on the journey, I just wish there weren't so many stops along the way.
