The film's existential questions ultimately inspire one to sit up in the movie theatre and wonder, "Why am I here?"

Aside from a few smart artistic flourishes, Jones delivers his story in a cookie-cutter indie style that's been done far better and far more interestingly before.

Compared to Diane's rather staid first half, this ambitious formalist turn is welcome. But fittingly, perhaps, for a film so fixated with death, it's too little, too late.

despite its perceptive realism, this frustratingly slight drama keeps looking for an identity throughout its morose and uninvolving 96 minutes, but just can't seem to find it.

Character actors often transition into leading roles, but the nature of said roles should evolve accordingly.

Mary Kay Place is very good as a woman whose life is full of despair. The movie is just too much of a trudge through the bad times of "Diane's" life.

Similar to Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, Kent Jones' film takes a look at the life of a caregiver with an intimate yet depressing eye. Sadly, it is not as clear and as visionary as Cuaron's film.

The film's pacing will be a struggle for younger audiences, the subject matter, a bitter and unpleasant pill for older audiences.

The film is an empathetic look at a character who is trying to stay strong for everyone around her, but as the film progresses, we see a Diane with tired eyes and a demeanour drained of that matriarchal strength.

Jones slyly builds momentum: his film begins in static, medium-to-long shots and ends with jerky close-ups; things are revealed subtly, and sometimes left unsaid...

Mary Kay Place has been floating under the radar for decades and all of that will change with Diane. She is giving depression and a mother's undying devotion a different kind of face. It's fascinating, heartbreaking and riveting. A career best.

Without question, Mary Kay Place is why "Diane" is worth your time. The film is a showcase for her in a way she's never before received.

Leaving me to remark with the blasť, but capital T True statement that Diane is one of the best American films of 2018.

Life is often meant to come undone, meant for the center to not hold...Diane is about loss and recovery, and the spinning of the world long after we die.

Diane is not here to change the world, or even your view of the world, but it's an excellent look at one woman trying to do her best with what she can.

Like death, Diane is too indiscriminate to be called cruel, but it is quietly vicious.

Quiet and profound, Kent Jones' feature debut Diane tells the small-scale and moving story of a woman navigating through her tiny community of friends and family in rural Massachusetts.

Diane is as deeply caring and kind as its protagonist.

'Diane' is an unrelenting portrait of real life, with all of its challenges and sadness, friends and family, and the inescapable truth that whatever we do, we are all headed to the same place in the end.
