Daniel Isn't Real is strong in its technical efforts, but it suffers greatly from a messy script and a story that isn't sure of what it wants to be.

This unfiltered dose of millennial angst needed a more adept conduit than this cartoonish misfire can muster.
November 29, 2019
Its performatively extreme imagery thinly masks a rather banal view of male subjectivity and inner conflict.

Mortimer builds Daniel Isn't Real to a conclusion that, in concept, should be both tragic and terrifying. Here, it just feels perfunctory.

It looked like Daniel Isn't Real might be a part of the solution to problematic portrayals of mental illness in horror, and what a shame that it wound up becoming a part of the problem.

There's not much to Daniel Isn't Real beyond a cynical, generic coming-of-age story and a lot of unexamined second-hand ideas about creativity, empathy, and spirituality.

Daniel Isn't Real has plenty of ambition and there are little pleasures here and there, but much like its central character, it never quite manages to connect in a satisfying manner.

There's a fascinating idea lurking in this arthouse psycho-horror drama... And it's a bit of a shame that nothing really comes of that, as the film tips over into inventively rendered nastiness, but little more than that.

The moderately creepy premise is squandered by a disappointing series of final-act twists that steer toward genre conventions.

The third act of Daniel Isn't Real ... searches for an answer to the mystery of Daniel, and in unlocking it, the movie loses itself...

For a while the film fascinates; but it loses its way by descending into full horror-movie mode in the last half-hour.

[Director] Adam Egypt Mortimer crafts Luke's descent with flourishes of Lynchian madness and an almost psychosexual level of paranoia.

Daniel Isn't Real is exploitation that eschews the trashier elements of the genre. As a director, Mortimer frames a great shot and pulls gangbusters performances out of Robbins and Schwarzenegger. It's minded, but also massively entertaining genre cinema.

I'd like to reiterate my enjoyment of the beginning and middle parts. The tone, look and disturbing special effects had me enthralled. I would mildly recommend Daniel Isn't Real if only to see how others might view it differently.

By trading a splatterfest premise for a metaphysical head trip, and by trading skin-slashing for head-scratching, the director has opened up his world to so many more ideas.

Playing out like a horror version of Drop Dead Fred, Daniel Isn't Real blends familiar tropes with some welcome, off-the-wall antics.

A near-perfect combination of body horror, cosmic horror and psychological horror that gets under your skin while also finding its way into your heart.

Daniel Isn't Real will be hovering just beyond the corner of your eye, looking amusedly over your shoulder, and breathing menacingly on your neck, for a long time to come.

Act 3 takes a weird and welcome Clive Barker turn, which is when elements stop being so stylishly predictable and become sloppily fascinating.
