Movie Info

An atmospheric, coming-of-age love story steeped in eerie mystery and inspired by the Gothic vampire novel of the same name. 15-year-old Lara lives with her father and her strict governess, Miss Fontaine, in total isolation and is struggling to find an outlet for her curiosity and burgeoning sexuality. When a carriage crash nearby brings a young girl into the family home to recuperate, Lara is enchanted by the eponymous Carmilla. The pair strike up a passionate relationship, which strikes fear into the heart of Miss Fontaine and a complex emotional triangulate emerges between the three women. Local rumors of an evil supernatural presence fuel Miss Fontaine's concern for Lara's well-being and with the exhortation of the family doctor, Fontaine seeks to put an end to the relationship for good.

Critic Reviews for Carmilla

It was a bold and ultimately wise choice for writer/director [Emily] Harris not to make this movie version of Carmilla a vampire story ... which would have cheapened the message of this movie ... Carmilla presents a mesmerizing Gothic atmosphere.

Carmilla lacks in surface-level supernatural motivation, it somewhat makes up for in its dark, foreboding melancholy and wholly atmospheric beauty.

At 90 minutes, it was a delectable dose of beauty and sensuality.

A saturated movie dripping with passion.

A film that is conceptually interesting and undeniably stylish, but which, ironically, has now been rendered bloodless, like a grad school paper on the original story brought only nominally to life.

Writer/director Emily Harris' movie elegantly avoids genre cliches and exploitation elements, instead narrowing in on the characters' loneliness and longing, making their emotions almost palpable.
