Time will only tell if Youmans matures into a more accomplished filmmaker, but based on the evidence provided in Burning Cane, I can't quite determine what potential others are seeing in this debut.

Outside Tillman's homily, made magnificent and effectively hypocritical through Pierce's gripping performance, the discourse falls flat and strangely trivial at times given the context.

When I say that Pierce lights up the screen: I mean it literally. Here's hoping Youmans achieves that level of mastery someday.

Without question, Youmans is courageous, hard-working, and committed to his vision. How much talent he has will be clearer when he stops trying to write like William Faulkner and use the camera like Claire Denis.

Youmans, who was 17 while making the film, presents not only an advanced visual language and style for his age but a striking emotional nuance in the portrayal of his characters...

Perhaps it's his youth, but the way Youmans refuses to adhere to filmmaking convention displays a confidence that is often breathtaking.

One might be right to believe that Burning Cane works best as vignettes of a could-be typical Black family living in a small town of rural South. It could also be seen as an ode to a people...

A contemplative and ethereal fable about the constant clash between the human and the spiritual worlds. [Full Review in Spanish]

Whilst it's not entirely the finished article, it's a raw and gritty treatise on Youmans' perspective on life growing up in the South

Pierce helps lead the way, as does the sheer excitement of watching a young filmmaker find their footing.

An hour and 17 minutes of glorious, troubling, beautiful movie watching. The scenes are stitched together like patches on a quilt, the seams made up of as beautiful thread as the thing itself.

Burning Cane is a movie that flows over you: It's less a structured narrative than a series of arcane images, each more beguiling and haunting than the last.

The Lord may work in mysterious ways, but here he has Youmans to beautifully document his mess on earth.

'Burning Cane' is a portrait of the overburdened church lady whose blind faith in her Bible and her men has failed her completely, as it is destined to do.

At nineteen years old, Phillip Youmans has made an authentic drama that a lot of indie directors would still be striving for on their second or third feature.

The strengths of "Burning Cane" are often also its weaknesses, but it would be an impressive debut at any age.

Led by note-perfect performances, Burning Cane presents two distinct halves with totally different weights.

There's a jaded harshness to Burning Cane. Its stylistic flourishes make it feel like a modern ghost story at times; a fitting outcome, given its tale of spiritual inheritance.

Resonates with the sound of thunder and the energy of a lightning bolt.
